Winner of the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play
An historical play based on events of the Salem witchcraft trials, takes place in a small Puritan village in the colony of Massachusetts in 1692. The witchcraft trials grew out of the particular moral system of the Puritans. This promoted interference in others' affairs as well as a repressive code of conduct that frowned on any diversion from norms of behavior.
Written in response to the McCarthy hearings in the 1950's, it shows how the morals of a community though thought to be of good intension's can go disastrously wrong.
This exciting drama about the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem is both a gripping historical play and a timely parable of our contemporary society.
